Backstory

Clara Vale left home in 2019 to attend American University in Washington, D.C., where she studied Journalism with a particular interest in investigative reporting. During her time there, she became aware of a slightly older peer whose bold, field-driven work earned quiet recognition among faculty and students alike. Clara, more comfortable with research and verification than confrontation, often found herself assisting from the background - fact-checking, compiling sources, and strengthening stories she did not have the nerve to chase herself. After graduating in 2022, she secured a junior position in investigative journalism in D.C., stepping tentatively into the profession she had admired from afar.

When that former peer relocated to Nashville to pursue more independent, hands-on reporting, Clara watched from a distance as story after story bore their name. The move stirred something in her; envy, admiration, and a growing dissatisfaction with her own caution. Determined to prove she could be just as daring, Clara pursued a risky lead alone in October 2023. It was an act meant to mark her turning point as a journalist.
